The impressive oil painting of Rouken Glen's Redwood tree has been donated to East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure by the artist's children: Lewis, Edmund and Rachel, who were keen to share Mary's work with the local community. The painting will be used as inspiration for a series of art workshops to be delivered by East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure
East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure marked the donation with an event, welcoming Mary's daughter, Rachel Munro to officially unveil the painting alongside Council Leader Owen O'Donnell, Provost Mary Montague, local councillors and art class participants.
Rachel said: “This much admired and impressive tree was a constant favourite in Mary's many dutiful laps of the park with her grandchildren who lived a stone’s throw away, so much so she felt inspired to capture this very recognisable landmark in this wonderful painting Rouken Glen Redwood.
“Mum was a wonderful artist and also an educator, so it's fantastic that the painting is now an inspiration for education. I thought it would be lovely to place the work somewhere that people would recognise and appreciate it, so I'm absolutely delighted to see the painting now in place at Eastwood House.”
Speaking at the event, Council Leader Owen O'Donnell said: “We want to thank Rachel, who is an East Renfrewshire resident, and her family for gifting this artwork to the care of East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure. Rachel was looking for a home for some of her mother's artwork. Due to the subject matter of the painting, she thought it would be most appropriate for it to be placed in an East Renfrewshire public building, where it could be appreciated and enjoyed. We were only too happy to accept this generous offer and thought Eastwood House would be a fitting backdrop.”
Anthony McReavy from East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure, said: “We're honoured that Mary's family has entrusted us with this wonderful painting. The Rouken Glen Redwood is now proudly displayed in a room that hosts a variety of art activities and other events and will serve as an inspiration for current and future art enthusiasts.”
Mary Wilson, who graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1958, moved to Nairn and embarked on a creative journey as a primary, secondary and art educator with husband and fellow artist John Wilson. She was a keen contributor to community projects, including the Inverness printmakers, the Nairn Book and Arts Festival and the Blue Door and Wasp Studio.
Rouken Glen Redwood is available to view during Eastwood House events or on request. Find out more about the painting:
