The activities are part of the Shelf Life project, funded by Scottish Libraries and Information Council (SLIC), which aims to encourage climate debate conversations and engagements and support climate literacy.
Author Tom Morgan Jones will deliver workshops to school children from Braidbar Primary at Giffnock Library and St Thomas's Primary at Neilston Library on World Book Day on 7 March 2024. The pupils will be encouraged to be curious about the world around them and express their ideas and feelings.
Local writer and presenter, Helen Cross, will also work with local school pupils at Netherlee, Neilston and Thornliebank Libraries, demonstrating the power of plants and how gardening can help the health of our climate and support our own mental and physical wellbeing. Helen, who launched her debut book 'Grow, Cook, Inspire; growing and cooking for a healthier mind and planet' at Giffnock Library last year, will take part in a series of workshops with children from Netherlee, Neilston and Thornliebank Primary schools.
Visible Mending workshops, led by textile artist and mending enthusiast Eilidh Weir, will be hosted at Barrhead, Giffnock and Mearns Libraries, where participants can learn to upgrade and keep favourite clothes to keep them out of landfill.
Scott Simpson, Head of Library and Information Services at East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure, said: “Libraries are at the heart of our communities and are ideally placed to host events that encourage conversations and inspire learning around important topics, like climate change.
“We are grateful to receive funding from the Scottish Library and Information Council to host a series of events as part of our Shelf Life project, with two fantastic authors, who will work closely with local school children, encouraging them to think about our planet. Our Visible Mending workshops offer practical, hands on advice and support from an experienced textile artist, to prolong the use of clothing items and save them from landfill, which is good for the planet and also saves money. We look forward to welcoming everyone along to enjoy our Shelf Life activities throughout March.”
Visible Mending workshops include: four ways to fix your socks - darning and more for woolens and stretchy fabrics, which takes place at Mearns Libraries on 11 March from 1.30 - 4.30pm and at Giffnock Library on 19 March from 9.45am-12.45pm.
