The funding will be used by East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure (ERCL), which manages the Active Schools and Community Sports Hub programmes. The cash will also contribute to sports coaching and volunteering from 2023-2027, as well as the development of school and community cycling over the next few years.
Ian Pye, Head of Sports and Physical Activity at ERCL, from East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure said: “We are thrilled to have funding approved from sportscotland to support our goals of motivating and inspiring people to participate, volunteer and officiate in sport. This is a substantial investment into sport and physical activity within East Renfrewshire which allows us to consolidate and develop school and community activities, which are a key part of the sports development pathway in East Renfrewshire.”
The East Renfrewshire Active Schools team is part of a national network, dedicated to developing and supporting the delivery of quality sporting opportunities for children and young people. The team works in partnership with primary schools, secondary schools and the wider community to provide high quality opportunities for children and young people to participate in sport before school, during lunchtimes and after school. They also work to increase capacity through the recruitment and support of volunteers to provide activity sessions in schools and develop effective pathways between schools and sports clubs in the local community.
Councillor Andrew Anderson, Convener for Education, Equalities, Culture and Leisure, said: “I am delighted that sportscotland has committed this investment to allow us to continue to develop our sport and physical activity programmes in schools and across our communities. Developing an active lifestyle from a young age is a positive step in supporting your own health and wellbeing through your life, so I’m looking forward to seeing our offer continue to grow in the years ahead.”
Chief Executive of sportscotland, Forbes Dunlop, added: “East Renfrewshire council’s vision over the next four years will continue to develop and improve school and community sporting activities. We share that ambition and are looking forward to continuing our close partnership with East Renfrewshire council and the Leisure Trust as they look to encourage and inspire as many people as possible to get involved in sporting activities.
“We are providing increased investment to East Renfrewshire council over the next four years, which will allow them to build on and expand the excellent work going on in the Active Schools and Community Sport Hub programmes. Our investment will also support an increased focus on inclusion and breaking down barriers to participation, with the aim of making sport and physical activity enjoyable and accessible for everyone.”
