Dr Stuart Nisbet, who is well known for his local history publications, will explore Scotland's involvement in slavery with an illustrated talk through his research journey at the library on 23 February. The event marks the publication of Stuart's first novel The Book of Here and There, which tells the story of the hunt for a Scottish slave owner, through a detective trail, but also through the voice of his enslaved scribe, Cato.
Retired structural engineer Stuart is a freelance tutor for East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure, leading heritage walks and classes throughout the local area. For more than 20 years, he has been one of the leading researchers on Scotland and slavery. In 2015, Stuart had a chapter on the first book on Scotland and slavery: Tom Devine’s Recovering Scotland’s Slavery Past.
Stuart said: “I'm pleased to mark the launch of my first novel, The Book of Here and There, at Giffnock Library and to welcome locals along to the event. I've worked with many keen historians in the area through my role leading East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure's heritage walks and classes and look forward to sharing my personal research journey with them on the evening.”
Stuart is also set to deliver a brand new series of East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure heritage walks and classes this spring.
