The 'Many Rivers to Cross' events commence on Wednesday 16 November at 7pm, with a BSL signed performance at Thorntree Hall in Thornliebank. The event will also be hosted at Duff Memorial Hall in Busby on Thursday 17 November at 7pm and Dunterlie Community Hall in Barrhead on Friday 18 November at 7pm. The sessions are free to attend, with refreshments provided, and there is no need to pre-book.

Donna, originally from Barrhead, is a writer, performer and video-maker who will perform at the session, followed by an informal discussion around what the area's COVID community memorial could be in 2023. She has been working with the local community to co-create the memorial as part of the project, with East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure and greenspace scotland.

A series of events have been hosted across East Renfrewshire as Donna continues to engage with groups and locals, exploring how the memorial can honour those who have lost their lives and how COVID restrictions and lockdown affected everyone.

Donna explained: “I’ve created a short performance to highlight the issues we’ve been discussing with all sorts of people across East Renfrewshire – looking not only at the loss, but the frustration, fear and confusion, alongside more positive examples of community support. We’ve been talking about the surrealness of the pandemic – the harshest restriction of not being able to say goodbye to the dying or give them the send-off they deserved; younger people missing out on their ‘rights of passage’ and a heightened awareness of mental health issues around isolation and lost confidence. Endeavouring to unite the ‘villages’ of East Renfrewshire, I am looking at the industrial growth of places through the ingenious use of local waterways. The same streams, dams and burns we took solace from during our lockdown rambles. The title ‘Many Rivers To Cross’ implies we still have a way to go…”

The Remembering Together programme is managed by greenspace scotland, aiming to bring together communities and artists/creative practitioners in collective acts of reflection, remembrance, hope and healing. Supported with Scottish Government funding, the memorial projects will be co-created in every local authority area of Scotland.

Moira McFadden from East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure, said: “Our work with greenspace scotland continues on the Remembering Together project this month, as we engage with the community and welcome locals along to our Many Rivers to Cross events. Donna will lead the free sessions with a performance and facilitate community discussions as we continue our work together, which will provide a lasting legacy and opportunity to reflect on this period of time for East Renfrewshire residents.”

For accessibility support to attend the sessions, please email artsandheritage@ercultureandleisure.org or contact Donna on 07512 363957.
