The Beat the Street East Renfrewshire game has launched with 2,386 participants signing up on its first morning and together walking, cycling, and rolling their way to more than 1520 miles.
Beat the Street is a free, interactive game that encourages people of all ages to move more and to get active; the East Renfrewshire game is taking place across Barrhead, Newton Mearns and Neilston and runs for four weeks.
Beeping and flashing sensors called ‘Beat Boxes’ have been placed on lampposts around the areas for the duration of the game to help participants explore the local area and all it has to offer and to develop the habit of regular exercise.
Primary school pupils have been provided with a card and a map, plus a card for an accompanying adult. The game is open to anyone of any age and the wider community can pick up a contactless card from one of the distribution points which are listed on the website at www.beatthestreet.me/eastrenfrewshire
Players then walk, cycle or wheel between the Beat Boxes which are spaced approximately half a mile apart – hovering their fobs or cards over the Beat Boxes to score points. The further players travel, the more points they score for their community or school team.
There are leaderboards for schools, community teams and workplace teams and each is divided into total and average points to ensure that smaller teams are in with an equal chance of winning. As a community, players can also help local charity SupERkids to win the first donation of £100 (up to a total of £500) when the overall active travel total reaches 10,000 miles!
The first week of the game is themed ‘Go Play’ for players to get to grips with the game before Go Travel, Go Wild and Go Celebrate.
Beat the Street Barrhead, Newton Mearns & Neilston has been commissioned by East Renfrewshire Council with support from Paths for All’s Smarter Choices, Smarter Places programme and Scotland's Towns Partnership’s Scotland Loves Local Fund. It is being delivered by Intelligent Health.
Councillor Tony Buchanan, Leader of East Renfrewshire Council, said: “By joining people together in a fun game, Beat the Street really encourages people of all ages and abilities to explore the area, to spend time together and to get active. We’re off to a great start and we are delighted to see so many people sign up and get involved. Keep up the great work!”
