GP practices have started to receive deliveries of the vaccine and some have now started vaccinating this priority age group.
Sheila and Terence Burns, who have been married for 68 years, both received their first dose of vaccine this morning, Friday 15 January, at Eastwood Health and Care Centre - making them amongst the first to be vaccinated by GPs in East Renfrewshire.
Sheila said: “I am very happy we have got the vaccine today, I want to be able to see my family and I hope this helps.”
Terence added: “It’s great. I couldn’t believe it when we got the call yesterday asking us to come today, everyone needs to get it.”
This follows the good news that East Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) was one of the first Partnerships to complete vaccinating care home residents in the area, with the vaccination team doing a follow-up to capture new residents, those who didn’t get it due to illness and any remaining staff.
Julie Murray, Chief Officer of East Renfrewshire HSCP said: “We are delighted our GPs have started vaccinating our over 80s population and we are working closely with them to support this programme in any way we can.
“The next phase locally will see our District Nursing team vaccinating residents who are over 80 and housebound.
“We are doing all we can to support residents and continue essential services in these challenging times and we will go above and beyond to work with colleagues across NHS GGC and the Council on the successful roll-out of the vaccination programme in East Renfrewshire.
“I must emphasise that the other measures in place are as important as the vaccine in supressing Covid-19. The FACTS measures are crucial to prevent the spread of this harmful virus through our communities and all residents should play their part and following this guidance.”
Residents in the over 80s age group should be assured that everyone who is eligible for the Covid-19 vaccine will be contacted by their GP via letter or telephone, so they should not contact their GP or health board directly. The public are also reminded that the vaccine will always be free, and they will not be asked to provide personal or identity details by text or over the phone, so to be aware of potential scams.
Help keep East Renfrewshire safe by adhering to lockdown restrictions and by remembering FACTS:
• Face coverings in enclosed spaces,
• Avoid crowded places,
• Clean your hands regularly,
• Two metre distancing
• Self-isolate and book a test if you have symptoms.
