Rainbow flag raised to celebrate diversity
A rainbow flag has been raised at the Council headquarters in East Renfrewshire to support the area’s LGBTI population.

Provost Jim Fletcher with Robbie McLaughlin, Xian Pall and Councillor Paul O’Kane, Convenor for Education and Equalities at East Renfrewshire Council, raising the rainbow flag to mark Pride Glasgow celebrations at the Council headquarters.
Members of the community, local councillors and staff attended the ceremony today, which was held to coincide with Pride Glasgow celebrations this weekend.
Councillor Paul O’Kane, Convenor for Education and Equalities who raised the flag, said: “It is great to see so much support in East Renfrewshire for the LGBTI community, I am pleased to be here today to raise the flag to mark this important occasion - the raising of the rainbow flag symbolises the diversity and the pride of our all of our local community”.
Provost Jim Fletcher, said: “Our first flag raising ceremony last year was well received, with members of the community coming together to create a positive stance against discrimination and violence towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people. I am delighted that East Renfrewshire Council is flying the rainbow flag again this year to show their support”.
Local LGBTI youth group members Xian Pall and Robbie McLaughlin attended the ceremony and assisted Councillor O’Kane in raising the flag.
The rainbow flag is made up of six horizontal bands of colour with each their own meaning, red as the symbol of life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, blue for harmony and purple for the spirit of the community.
Building on last year’s event, a reception was then held at Eastwood House chaired by Provost Fletcher with public information stalls and short videos highlighting some of the key issues that can affect LGBTI people.
