SOCK Glasgow (Somme Observed Community Knitting) is running a project to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.
We would like to hear from interested knitters/crochet-ers who would be willing to produce 16cm squares for us.
We want to collect 3,000 squares, one to represent each member of the Glasgow Pal's Battalions for whom this battle was their first major engagement in WW1. Pals Battalions were formed during WW1 when the government encouraged groups of friends/colleagues to join up to fight in the war together. The three battalions formed in Glasgow were the Glasgow Tramways (recruited from men who worked for the city's tram service); Glasgow Boys Brigade (previous and current to the time members of that organisation) and Glasgow Chamber of Commerce (recruited from former pupils of local schools, the technical college and various white collar workers from the area).
We particularly want to do something practical to honour the sacrifice of these men but also to raise awareness of the women at home, who were encouraged to knit for the troops but wanted to do much more than that.
The squares will be combined into panels which will be installed on the railings outside the Peoples' Palace (Glasgow's social history museum) in Glasgow Green from 1st July to 31st August 2016.
As long as the squares are 16cm x 16cm they can be any colour or style in knitting or crochet.
All squares must be received by 31st May 2016.
