Pupils and staff were inspired by hearing the stories of a victim of past horrors as well as an international expert.

Senior pupils met Arn Chorn Pond, a musician who lived through the Khymer Rouge years in Cambodia in the 1970s, and Racelle Meiman, an educator on the Holocaust, peace processes and human rights.

Both spoke with senior pupils, met children from the wider school, and enjoyed performances from Isobel Mair’s Reels on Wheels dancers and the school choir.

Arn Chorn Pond also played some traditional Cambodian music on his flute and a group of children took part in a ‘Glow meet’ – where other schools tuned in to Isobel Mair via the Scottish schools’ intranet – to hear about his experiences.

A school spokesperson said: “Our visitors spoke eloquently to our pupils and this visit has added to our growing understanding of human rights as we journey towards ‘Rights Respecting Schools’ status.

“Thanks to Educating Scotland for organising this event.”

Isobel Mair School is for pupils with additional support needs. Located in Newton Mearns, it welcomes pupils from across East Renfrewshire.
