A new secondary school for Barrhead is a step closer with the announcement that East Renfrewshire Council’s bid for funding support, for a new build replacement for Barrhead High School, has been successful.
Education and Equalities convener Councillor Elaine Green said: “An application for support through the auspices of Scotland’s Schools for the Future Phase 3 Programme had been made over the summer period. This was to take forward the well-known investment priority - a new secondary school for Barrhead.
“The investment will provide improved facilities for around 850 pupils, their parents, staff and community users and is estimated around £22m. The new building is planned to be open for the August 2015 S1-intake, with work starting on-site early 2014.
“As we know, Barrhead is a town undergoing regeneration, and the new school will greatly benefit the community, in addition to better meeting the needs of the young people that attend.
Councillor Green added: “The council strives to deliver high quality services to the communities of East Renfrewshire, including continuous improvement of its schools, and recognises the value that the built environment can make. East Renfrewshire Council has demonstrated a strong commitment in investing in the school estate, and this new build is further evidence on the value we as a council place on our schools, knowing that our community value education.
“I am sure we will all look forward to the day in 2015 when we can give the pupils, staff and their parents, facilities that they deserve and have been promised.”
