There are many benefits that make stopping worth the effort:
• Stopping smoking will improve your health and your bank balance.
• Smoking 20 cigarettes a day costs around £9, quitting will save you £250 a month and £3,000 a year.
• You are four times more likely to stop smoking if you get support from a stop smoking service and use a pharmaceutical product.
In support of No Smoking Day, East Renfrewshire Smokefree Community Services will be out and about locally on Wednesday 9 March. Practitioners will be dropping in to various venues with Stubbs, the Smokefree Community Services mascot giving out information and advice on how to be a Proud Quitter.
And from week beginning 7 March, No Smoking Day information points will be available at Barrhead Council Main Street, Barrhead Health and Care Centre, Barrhead Foundry and Auchenback Resource Centre.
Cllr Lafferty, East Renfrewshire convener for social care and health said: “Stopping smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health. The health benefits are almost immediate and include improvements in blood pressure, circulation and breathing.
“Quitting also makes you look better by improving your skin and teeth and it helps your finances too with smokers saving on average almost £3,000 a year if they quit.”
“If you have tried to stop smoking before and been unsuccessful, keep trying. With the right help and support along with determination, you can be successful and win your battle against cigarettes and tobacco.
“Take the opportunity to come along to an information stand where you will be able to access information and tips on stopping smoking.”
There is also useful support and advice online at www.nhsggcsmokefree.org.uk and www.nosmokingday.org.uk or on the council web site at www.eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk
