Plans are in place and the winter team is ready to deal with any severe weather over the next few months.
More than 6000 tonnes of salt is stockpiled ready to hit the roads and pavements.
Convener for infrastructure and sustainable growth, Councillor Tony Buchanan, said: “Our winter team is ready to swing into action.
“Most people recognise that main roads, access to fire stations and bus routes need to come first before smaller streets are done. To help people to help themselves we’ve got more than 300 street grit bins and some larger community bins in key locations. Priority routes and grit bin locations are listed on the roads and gritting page of the council web site www.eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk/winterwatch
“Please remember that although we aim to provide the best possible service, we cannot guarantee that all roads will always be completely free of ice and snow. Some roads carry such high volumes of traffic that congestion occurs at peak periods. Sometimes freezing weather happens at the same time as peak traffic levels. This makes it difficult for gritting vehicles to get on to the road network.
"Even when we have salted the roads, it takes time for it to work; rain can wash the salt off roads and they may ice over again and in severe weather conditions, even salting will not prevent the roads from icing up. In severe conditions we may have to continue treating our main routes until such times as they are considered safe before we can attend to minor roads. If you are out on the roads in bad weather, please take account of the weather conditions, wrap up warmly and make sure your keep your speeds down when driving.
“What we can guarantee is that we have a hard-working and dedicated team primed to deliver the best possible assistance for drivers and pedestrians.”
Roads in East Renfrewshire are treated by priority: Main roads, bus routes, one main access to schools and one main access to fire stations.
In cases of heavy snow or long spells of icy weather, the service will complete the priority routes then aim to work through others. Treatment priorities would only be diverted on Police Scotland instruction.
The council is not responsible for the M77 or the A726 between Maidenhill and East Kilbride. These are the responsibility of private contractors.
To help pedestrians, the council has a range of specialised footway snow clearing and salt spreading equipment.
Priorities for footways are urban shopping areas and precincts, other busy areas such as approaches to train stations, steep hills in housing areas and in the vicinity of care homes and sheltered housing, and one footway along the frontage of each school.
The winter service also provides more than 300 grit bins and 18 community bins across the area and and you can also pick up salt at our depot in Carnwadric Road, Thornliebank but you must bring your own container and shovel.
This means residents can also be helping their own community, particularly in periods of prolonged ice when the winter service is working round the clock on main areas.
See www.eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk/winterwatch for daily weather and gritting updates and to find out where your nearest grit bin is.
