Nominations are open from 10 November and anyone who is 16 or over, on the electoral register and passionate about their local area, is being asked to take a fresh look at their community council and complete a nomination form before the 9 December deadline.
Nominations are being sought for three community councils in Broom, Kirkhill and Mearns Kirk; Crookfur, Greenfarm and Mearns Village and Giffnock.
The call out for nominations is part of the second phase of work to establish community councils across East Renfrewshire.
East Ren is committed to having a full quota of vibrant community councils and supporting all eleven community councils to be re-established.
Community councils are a great way for people who care about their local area to get things done. They usually meet once a month for a couple of hours and are a special type of community group that have a legal right to be consulted on a number of important local issues. They are a direct link between local people and the council, NHS, police, fire service and other public bodies.
Each community council receives a small amount of money from the council to operate and to influence what happens in their local area. They are consulted on a wide range of issues, such as new housing plans, alcohol licensing applications for local businesses, roads and crime, and can campaign around specific issues, run local events and support good causes.
Councillor Mary Montague launched the election campaign and said: “We’re looking for people from all walks of life. All you need are ideas, energy and enthusiasm and we will provide as much support as you need to get the best from being a community representative.”
Following the elections, new community councils will be established and training and support will be provided for all new community representatives.
Anyone interested in joining their community council should visit www.eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk/communitycouncils to download a nomination pack or email ccelections@eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk with any questions.
