Events to mark Adult Learners Week

It’s Adult Learners’ Week next week – and residents are being reminded that a number of events have been lined up in East Renfrewshire.

They will be held from 19 to 22 May at venues in Barrhead and Newton Mearns.
All are free and everyone is welcome to go along, try new things, meet new people and have fun.

Kicking off the programme on Monday 19 May will be a world cafe in Mearns Library.

This is a change to have a conversational chat in English with learners who do not have it as their first language, and will let new students practice what they have been learning. It starts at 10am.

Next is a ‘making the most of your money’ session in Carlibar Learning Centre, Barrhead, from 2 to 3pm on Tuesday 20.

Running the class is the HERO project (Helping East Renfrewshire Online). It will give advice on budgeting that’s useful for everyone but particularly those affected by welfare reform.

On Wednesday from 1pm there will be a workshop on the importance of sleep, again held in Carlibar Learning Centre.

Also on Wednesday, parents of Carlibar Primary pupils will demonstrate how they have been performing stories using cardboard boxes and puppets. See the show and learn how to use the method for your school. ‘Cardboard box storytellers’ starts at 10.30am in the learning centre.

Thursday’s event will combine the regular employability support drop-in – help to look for jobs online, and interview practice – with a session on ‘mindfulness’. This is a new meditation trend that can help with everyday stress.

This session was to have been held at Carlibar but due to the school being used as a polling station for the European elections, it has been moved to Dunterlie Resource Centre. It starts at 1pm.

The council’s adult and family learning service has organised the events.
