St Cadoc’s kids have drawn up a brilliant travel plan, packed with road safety tips and pointing out the benefits of walking and cycling to school.
Now the school’s junior road safety officers (JRSOs) have officially unveiled their plan at a special launch event.
And pupils, staff and parents are now being asked to take their important advice on board.
St Cadoc’s four JRSOs are Lisa Livingstone, Olivia Burke, Cara Wotherspoon and Nusayhah Ashraf.
The P7 girls, working together with teachers and partners such as police and community wardens, have produced their four-page plan for everyone, and their parents, to use.
It aims to provide green travel information to parents and pupils, to encourage them to make sensible travel choices. This is both to reduce traffic congestion and, more importantly, ensure all pupils can reach and leave school safely.
It has do’s and don’ts for safe parking and cycling, safety checklist for children walking to school, and a reminder of the Green Cross Code.
They point out that there are many benefits from walking to school – as well as the environment there are increased levels of alertness and concentration.
Youngsters and parents are also encouraged to ‘park and stride’ – park away from the school and walk the remainder of the way. This is to cut down the number of cars to reduce congestion and air pollution and create a safer environment for children.
One of the main aims of the plan is to encourage the number of pupils walking to school. The JRSOs want this to increase from the current 25 per cent to 28 per cent by September last year.
To that end, the team has also produced information leaflets and a ‘walk to school’ map that has suggested routes to school suggested car parks and quiet roads for ‘park and stride’ drop-offs.
Head teacher Maria McBride said: “Our travel plan is very exciting because it provides information to pupils, parents and guardians to not only travel safely, but also encourage sensible travel choices that can have a very positive effect on the environment.
“We truly hope it can make a difference.”
One of the JRSOs, Lisa Livingstone, said: “We enjoyed doing the plan and hope it helps.”
Vice-convener for education and equalities, Councillor Paul O’Kane, said: “This is a first-class travel plan – congratulations to St Cadoc’s for a job well done.
“Safety around our schools as well as the health and wellbeing of our children is of paramount importance which is why projects such as this are vital.”
The work of the junior road safety officers is supported by the school’s Speeding Ted team, who speak to different school classes to teach the importance of obeying speed limits and the dangers of speeding.
